In today’s blog I want to share a lesson that I feel I learned the hard way on my fitness journey, and in my life in general. I am currently reading “The Obstacle is the Way” by Ryan Haliday, and right now the book feels kind of obvious in its concepts.. But 10 years ago I definitely wouldn’t have felt that way!
At times, life seems to be a never-ending series of challenges, one after another, testing our patience our faith and our resilience. But hidden within these “trials”, failures, or setbacks, often lie undiscovered opportunities that could potentially steer us towards growth and a better life. Let's dive into this together and I’ll share some of my story…
How my struggles with my health made were the spark that grew my business to 7 coaches and over 250 online clients, and growing.
A few years back, my health was in a pretty rough state. Disordered eating habits, body dysmoprthia, a major concussion, and overdependence on antibiotics had thrown me into a whirlpool of gut and hormone issues. It was only when I hit my “rock bottom” that I started to take my health into my own hands, and take full responsibility for my life.
Prior to ending up in the hospital with a ruptured stomach ulcer, I felt like like was just f&*cking unfair.
Why do I have to struggle with acne?
It’s not fair that girls just look so thin and pretty and I’m always bloated.
Why did I get bad genetics and big boobs that I don’t want… that’s not fair.
Everything was “unfair” and somebody elses fault…
But by pointing blame, I was shirking responsibility and spiraling into unhealthy avoidance behaviours. Binge watching netflix, drinking, scrolling social media…
It took a hospital trip to wake me up.
The challenges I faced became my opportunities to learn about the human brain and body, and the gut brain connection. I dove into understanding the nuances of health, and holistic alternatives - which led me to yoga, and then to personal training - and now lifestyle coaching!
What started as a personal quest for better health transformed into a mission to guide others navigating similar challenges, turning a distressing period into an opportunity for growth and community building.
Pivoting in Uncertain Times
When 2020 arrived with the global pandemic, it unsettled established norms and threatened the stability of many careers, mine included. The brick-and-mortar foundations of my career - yoga classes, personal training, and nutrition consulting - seemed to be crumbling. Faced with an uncertain future and a mortgage to pay, I decided to move my business online. Now while Covid may have seemed like setback, inconvenience and for some a tragedy - it birthed the 2.0 version of my career, and enabled me to move completely online - connecting with individuals globally and reshaping my career in a way that I will be forever grateful.
Discarding the Victim Mentality: The Fallacy of Fairness
Often, we fall into the trap of seeing life as a series of events happening *to us*, making us feel like victims of an unfair universe. This perspective can foster negativity and a sense of helplessness. However, a small shift in perspective, viewing life as unfolding *for us*, can change the game altogether.
The expectation of a 'fair' life is somewhat misleading. It creates an illusion that smooth sailing is the norm, which is rarely the case. Life is, in fact, a mix of highs and lows, good days and bad days.
Embracing Life as it Unfolds
Switching from the role of a victim to an active participant in life's journey allows us to leverage challenges as opportunities for personal growth. By adopting the mindset that life is happening *for us*, we begin to perceive challenges as learning opportunities, shaping us into more adaptable and resilient individuals.
This mindset encourages us to take charge of our narrative, seeking out the learning in each experience and growing through trials, without being bogged down by notions of fairness. It enables us to steer our lives in directions we hadn't considered before, fostering growth and personal development.
Tips for Navigating Life's Twists and Turns
1. Self-reflection: Use challenges as an opportunity to reflect and identify areas for growth and improvement.
2. Adaptability: Be flexible and willing to change course as circumstances evolve.
3.Networking: Build connections that offer fresh perspectives and open doors to new opportunities.
4. Resilience: Develop the ability to bounce back from setbacks, ready to face the next challenge.
5. Continuous Learning: Stay committed to learning and equipping yourself with knowledge and skills that empower you to handle life's complexities confidently.
Looking back, I realize that my journey, with all its ups and downs, has been a rewarding learning experience. It serves as a reminder that a shift in perspective can transform the way we approach life's challenges, helping us find opportunities in the most unlikely places.
